Pipeline introduction

H67 is a multiplayer tank-based shooting game running on mobile. The size of a standard map is 2km*2km, we use Sketchup and photoshop at whitebox stage, then the map will be built in UE4 and convert into Messiah (Netease commercial engine) .

One example about my work as a level designer:

 

step1:theme selecting

Theme: Norway-Narvik

Geographic reference: I collect some WW2 reference photos, give me an idea how this city was like, also a lot of information which can help me on designing, for instance: terrain complexity/vegetation coverage/urbanization level/ layout etc.

step2: gather enlightening information

I also collect some modern photos found on google earth which are very helpful: Some local pictures give me a reference to build a port with complex transport system.

This  local picture gives me a layout reference to build a railway system.

Also collect background information and local features that I can use to enforce the topic of this map, make it more convincing and more stunning:

1. 'Ice-free seaport' means the surrounding sea area shound't be freezed.

2. 'Major transshipment point for iron ore from the rich Kiruna-Gällivare mines in northern Sweden' means we can design more rail system at this map.

3. Norwegian colorful wooden house,  Norwegian cedar.

4. Aurora could be a good choice.

5. Wreckage of German Zerstorer battleship.

step3: 2D layout 

Planning macro 2D layout based on a historical map of Narvik in 1907. This layout gives me a scale as telemetry to measure combat system needs.

step4: 3D white box

Dividing macro layout into individual micro zones. Designing combat spaces for each of those individual zones.

Polishing each zones to gameplay that staisfied for types of players. The stage spends most of time and energy to iretate post-lunch balancing and changing  maps in accordance with community sentiment.
